Recording Tips to Help You Shine

1

Keep It Short and Impactful

Aim for about a minute. A concise message is more likely to be watched all the way through—and remembered.

2

Start with Your Name and Where You’re From

It helps personalize your story and connect with viewers who may relate to your experience or community.

3

Speak with Respect

Using a respectful tone ensures your message is taken seriously and creates space for productive dialogue.

4

Find a Quiet Place

Background noise can be distracting. A quiet environment helps your voice come through loud and clear.

Why Your Voice Matters

Welcome to Voices Heard. This is a space where you can record and share your story to amplify your voice and bring it directly to the people who shape policy: your senators and representatives.

Homelessness and housing instability affect millions of people across the country. At the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), we are committed to connecting those millions of voices with their representatives to push for real change.

Your voice and your experience matter! Elected officials need to hear from you about the effect their decisions have on the people they represent, and by sharing your story, you are making an impact. So hit record, and together, we can keep fighting for the resources and policies needed to make sure everyone has a place to call home.

Need Help Getting Started?

Think about how you’d answer questions like:

  • Why is stable housing important to me? My family? My neighbors?
  • How has access to stable, affordable housing positively impacted my life?
  • What does my community struggle with because it doesn’t have enough affordable housing?
  • What challenges have I faced trying to find affordable housing?
  • How has the rising cost of rent impacted my ability to pay for other necessities, like groceries, transportation, childcare, and medical care?
  • Why should my elected officials make affordable, accessible housing a priority?
